LOS ANGELES — John Cox, a Republican business owner who has tried and failed for nearly two decades to win elected office, snagged a spot in the November runoff for California governor with the help of President Donald Trump, but that support could hurt him in the winner-take-all race with Democrat Gavin Newsom.

Cox got about a quarter of the votes counted so far in Tuesday’s election to easily outdistance former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for second to Newsom, who won by a comfortable margin...

SAN ANTONIO (KABB/WOAI/CNN) – It’s back to normal at the San Antonio International Airport after a day of monkey business.

For almost two hours Monday, a 40-pound rhesus macaque named Dawkins wandered a secured section of the airport after escaping his crate.

The baggage handling system was closed for about an hour to make sure the monkey couldn’t get past the airport’s secured section.

Cellphone video shows crews getting ready to fire a tranquilizer gun at the monkey. Officials from local agencies took the animal safely away after tranquilizing him.

"It was literally an army of people in black suits," said Russ Handy, the airport aviation director...

2 high school students dead in San Antonio slaying-suicide

SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Police say two high school students are dead following a slaying-suicide in San Antonio.

Officials say 19-year-old Louis Nickerson fatally shot his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend Clarissa Riojas at an apartment complex Wednesday.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says Nickerson broke into the apartment and shot Riojas to death in front of her younger sister. He says Nickerson fled to a nearby wooded area, where he fatally shot himself.

Riojas and Nickerson were both seniors at Highlands High School.

McManus says the students had ended their relationship about a week before their deaths. He says Riojas had recently stopped answering Nickerson’s calls.

A school district spokeswoman says a crisis team of counselors was sent to the school...
